Loki and Smoky
Since January 1, 2008 smoking bans have become effective in large parts of Germany - to former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and his wife Loki it's all hallow words. The couple merrily continues to chuff - and is even handed an ashtray.
Throughout Germany, smokers may groan about the numerous bans of smoking which are effective in many federal states - not so for former Chancellor Schmidt and his wife Loki. The couple does not allow anybody to deprive them from their smoking pleasure: like at the traditional New Year's punch in the Hamburg theater "Winterhuder Fährhaus" on January 6. They were even handed an ashtray.
The couple does not even think about stopping to smoke. Loki Schmit told a newspaper that even their doctor discouraged them from quitting. The change would be too straneous for their bodies. The 88 year old lady added that she had started smoking when at age 10.

Since the Schmidts were provided with ashtrays, they should be allowed to smoke. If they came to see a big sign that there's to be absolutely no smoking allowed at all, they probably would've have complied. The fact is that smokers and non-smokers need to get along, and smokers should be allowed to puff in public as long as they ask nonsmokers if they mind. I admire the Schmidts, and hope that they continue their ways. The obnoxious so-called "do-gooders" who impose complete bans on smoking aren't any less offensive than smokers who impose their smoke on others.
