Surprise, Surprise

Wednesday, February 27

This morning started off in great astonishment.

I think of myself as someone who is an active reader. Currently, I finish at least one book per week. Not only do I like reading, but also do I love to buy books and neatly line them up in my bookshelf. Somehow it makes me feel sage and sapient, maybe sincere, to have so many books around me.

Every now and then I want to know more about someone. This is what happened with Vera Dillier last week. In Switzerland, she is well-known for her marriage to Peter Dillier which ended in a harsh battle. A battle that many married-couples suffer when they decide to separate and Vera Dillier wrote a book about.

When I saw her on a television show last week I wanted to know more about her story. I intended to make her book, suitably named «Heirate nie einen Schweizer» (Do not ever marry a Swiss), my next reading project.

Unfortunately I was unable to find it, because no bookshop was selling it anymore. I decided to write a letter to her and ask her for support.

Et voilĂ : To my great amazement, I found a copy of her book in the mail this morning. And what is more, she signed it and written in a dedication in which she wishes me well for my education. Payment order missing.

I am truly looking forward to reading her book!

  1. Wow, that's interesting, brawnyhunk.

I also wonder, what was it on the television show that made you want to know more about her situation?

But of course, it was very gracious of her to send the book, and I'm glad for you.

  2. You are not blogging as much these days as you were in December.
I hope the reason is because you're having a bit of fun while you're between major phases in your life.
I hope you enjoyed Zermatt. Was it fun?! In this area it would be great for me to live vicariously through you, through reading any reminiscences you might post, as I didn't get to Switzerland to ski this season, though I badly wanted to. My trip to FRA/Stuttgart fell through so I couldn't think of an excuse to take a side trip to winter Playland.
I hope you and your family and your friends are well. We are well here in sunny and warm California.

  3. @90hazelnut: what I was most interested in was to find how someone so special, intelligent, smart, and sassy can get cautght up in such a harsh battle. I finished the book within 2 days. It was very interesting even though the law is quite different today.
